Mistakes people make when choosing an attorney

Attorneys are instrumental in helping many people seek and recover compensation for personal injuries. Now you or a loved one has been injured, and you are seeking someone to represent you, or to at least tell you whether you might have a case.

Here is a review of a few common mistakes people make on their attorney searches so you do not have to learn them the hard way.

Being shy

It is normal to feel overwhelmed or intimidated when meeting with an attorney. However, it is not the time to be shy. To help ensure your inquiries are answered, prepare a list of essential questions before your meeting instead of having to think of them on the fly.

Hiring after meeting with only one person

It is a great thing if you click with the first attorney you meet and feel like he or she is qualified. Still, take the time to meet with at least one other attorney. Many offer free consultations, so you should not be out much money, if at all. After these meetings, if you still like the first attorney the best, you can be secure in the knowledge that this person is truly the right fit.

Prioritizing cost

Experience, connection, reputation and abilities are critical factors when choosing an attorney. Cost can be, too, but too many people focus on it to the exclusion of other factors. As a result, they get overcharged or must deal with lower-quality service. In some good news, many personal injury firms operate on a contingency basis. Only if they win a case do they get fees from you.

Believing that bigger means better

Bigger firms have some apparent advantages over smaller firms. For example, they might have (or seem to have) more funds and resources. However, it can be a mistake to dismiss smaller firms. They are often able to provide personalized attention and should have sufficient funds and resources to see your case through.
