Man in stolen car causes wreck; charged with DUI

On Nov. 18, a man driving a stolen car ran the red light at a major intersection in Colorado Springs, causing a four-vehicle crash, according to authorities. Three people were injured in the collision. Police say the driver of the stolen car was driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. The man was taken into custody and held on $10,000 bond on a range of charges, including vehicular assault and DUI.

The accident, which shut down traffic at Airport and Academy, occurred when the 22-year-old man failed to yield at the intersection's red light and hit two other vehicles. According to authorities, a total of four vehicles were damaged in the crash. Some occupants in the vehicles involved had to be extricated by emergency responders.

The physical, emotional and financial damage arising from motor vehicle accidents can last long after the accident scene has been cleared. Intersection accidents can be particularly serious, given the severity of physical injuries suffered when fast moving cars collide head-on. Drivers and passengers could suffer major injuries that require immediate medical attention, and in some cases, a victim might need life-long care.

Accident victims injured due to the actions of a reckless driver might receive compensation that offsets the costs of necessary medical and rehabilitative care. Once liability for the crash has been established, these victims might want to file a personal injury claim with the assistance of legal counsel. A lawyer could represent a victim in settlements with insurance companies or in court.
